Case Study: Custom Dual Bandpass Filter to improve on a first stage of development filter wheel prototype system.

 

Customer Challenge: The customer was developing a new system and was looking at ways  to reduce the overall size and cost of the instrument. One of the original prototypes included a filter wheel which was bulky and prone to mechanical issues associated with motors and bearings. The second prototype of this product would utilise a dual bandpass filter to remove the need for the filter wheel and most mechanical components.

Vortex’s Solution: When we joined this project the original instrument had been made using 2 pairs of standard bandpass filters in a filter wheel. The customer had a simpler idea for the overall system for detecting 2 species but it hinged on finding someone who could make accurate dual band filters. We began by measuring the existing single bandpass filters to gain an understanding of the system. After discussions with the customer’s development team, a specification was drawn up for a dual filter and these were designed and manufactured as a ‘fast prototype’ within 3-4 weeks

The Result: We were able to successfully manufacture the dual bandpass filters to specification and they were successfully qualified, the customer and Vortex are now looking at production volumes. The whole programme of work has helped the customer reduce cost and assembly complexity. We pride ourselves on being a ‘low inertia’ partner company for product development/improvements.
