Case Study: Development of a Notch Filter for Imaging Applications
Customer Challenge: Our customer was developing a new system for a diagnostic medical application using a silicon photodiode detector to view spectral regions of interest through the visible range and the near infrared. One of the complications was the interference between 770 – 830 nm which needed to be blocked to give clearer images either side in the transmission bands.
Vortex’s Solution: Vortex suggested a notch filter to block the interference around 810nm whilst maintaining a high transmission level either side of this band through the visible (425 – 700 nm) and the short-wave infrared 950 – 1100 nm. 20 samples were produced in the first instance for test and qualification.
Outcome: We were able to design, develop and produce these filters for initial testing within 3 weeks. After 4 years of thorough testing they were officially qualified and production volumes have continued for many years. These filters are very stable and robust due to our state-of-the art high energy sputtering process and will perform exactly the same for many years, longer than the instruments life cycle.
