Case Study: Advanced 4600 nm Centre Wavelength Filter with Wide Out-of-Band Blocking

Customer Challenge: This customer required an accurate 4600 nm centre wavelength (CWL) filter for a gas detection application with deep out-of-band blocking from the UV to 8000 nm. This demanding specification required high precision deposition technology, unachievable in high production volumes with more traditional technology. The accuracy is required to avoid ‘cross talk’ from neighbouring gases with larger IR absorption bands.

Vortex’s Customised Approach: We utilised our fully automated sputter deposition coating technology to achieve the Narrow Band Response and the necessary out-of-band blocking. These are long coating runs and automation, using Vortex’s proprietary software, is critical for accuracy, such extended coatings and repeating them is difficult and error prone in manual operation. Our investment in state-of-the-art coating technology and advanced machinery makes coating less of a ‘black art’ and gives excellent repeatability even if production is required again 2 or 3 years later.

The Outcome: We successfully produced initial batches of the above filter to all aspects of the specification which including various environmental durability and temperature stability tests and backed this up with consistent supply over many years to this day.

This project highlights the critical role of advances in optical coating. Our commitment, through investment in cutting-edge technology, enables us to meet the complex demands of modern applications. By staying at the forefront of the industry, we can deliver high-quality, precision-engineered solutions to our customers. Vortex remains committed to investment in optical coating technology, reaffirming our position as a market leader.
