Case Study: A ‘budget’ Wide Bandpass Filter achieved with attention to substrate choice and coatings.

Customer Challenge:

Vortex undertook a project to develop a wide bandpass filter that transmits light in the 450-490 nm range with out of band blocking from 300 – 1200 nm. The challenge was to achieve this broad blocking range while maintaining cost efficiency. In optical filter manufacturing, the substrate often represents a smaller portion of the total cost, and the coating process is typically more expensive. With careful substrate selection and optimised coatings, the transmission and blocking requirements can often be achieved within very tight budget constraints.

Vortex’s Solution:
For this project, we used the properties of 2.0 mm thick Schott BG38 glass and suitable coatings to meet both criteria, firstly the wide bandpass filter for 450-490 nm range and the blocking required to give the required system performance. The performance of the wide bandpass filter and the BG 38 substrate is shown above.

The Result:
Budgetary constraints, light transmission efficiency, and comprehensive blocking requirements were all successfully met. We hold a wide range of substrates in stock ready for immediate coating and prototyping.  Also our network of trusted optics suppliers create an ability us to provide a one stop solution for your optical component needs.
