Case Study: V-Coat Anti-Reflection Coatings for Use with LED’s
V-Coats have a narrow but high peak transmission often above 99.5% for 2 sides making them highly desirable for applications using LED’s which do not require such wide transmission bands. In this example the lens was being used with a mid-infrared 3300nm LED. The LED had peak emission between 3100 and 3400 nm so we established that due to the narrow range a V-coat would be the most suitable Anti-Reflection coating. This LED is typically used for methane (CH₄) detection due to methane’s strong absorption band at 3300 nm. With this job we coat it in larger 0.5mm thick sapphire wafers which we hold in stock on the shelf ready for immediate coating and then dice it using our onsite dicing saw. For dicing sapphire, we have recently developed a new process achieving edge chips less than 0.1mm which was essential for this job due to the used area being up to 0.1mm of the edge of the part.
