Case Study: Developing Short Pass Filters for Optical Coherence Tomography in Ophthalmology

Customer Challenge: A leading medical technology company was developing a new instrument for ophthalmic imaging in an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) system. They required a short pass filter transmitting wavelengths between 1000 and 1375 nm to enhance the imaging capabilities of their OCT devices. The project was urgent and rapid prototypes had to be developed in just 3 weeks to begin the lengthy and rigorous qualification process needed for medical applications.

Vortex’s Solution: We were able to meet this short deadline due to our ability to be agile and flexible in our production which is a result of our 10 fully automated coating machines, on site dicing capability, large stock of standard substrates and our in house expertise in coating design. All of this meant that the whole job could be done in house without lost time from having to subcontract aspects of the job.

Our design team worked closely with the customer to understand their specific requirements and develop a specification for the short pass filter that should work as they intend it to, as this was a completely new development project.

Outcome: The rapid delivery of the prototypes (under the 3-week deadline) enabled the customer to begin their qualification process without delay. The prototypes underwent rigorous evaluation, and the feedback showed successful optical and environmental performance, meeting the stringent requirements for medical applications. This success improved the performance of their OCT technology as well as reinforcing Vortex’s reputation as a reliable partner in the medical device sector.
