Case Study: Revitalizing Legacy Filter Supply through Reverse Engineering

Customer Challenge:

Our customer faced a significant predicament with their supply chain as a large stock of this particular wide band pass filter had run down to almost 0 over many years and the previous supplier was no longer offering this service. The challenge was to recreate this critical component to ensure continuity in their operations.

Vortex’s Solution:

We began by measuring a sample of the previous supplier’s filter on our state-of-the-art Perkin Elmer Spectrometers. Through precise optical measurements of transmission, reflection and optical density and collaboration with our customer on the end application and specific requirements, we were able to develop an accurate new specification that matched the performance of the original. A first batch of 20 windows was produced for testing and qualification by our customer, once these were passed, we transitioned onto larger production volumes and have had several years of steady growth in the volume of this part with our customer.

The Result:

Through our innovative approach and collaborative efforts, Vortex successfully replaced the legacy filter with a new, precisely engineered solution. The customer’s operational continuity was restored, and they have benefited from a steady supply of high-quality filters. This case highlights Vortex’s capability to solve complex supply chain issues, ensuring customer satisfaction and operational resilience.
